Sponsor Letter
A sponsor letter (also known as a Certificate of Eligibility) is an official document from a Catholic parish pastor that confirms a person is a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing and is legally qualified to act as a godparent or sponsor for a sacrament like Baptism or Confirmation.
What the Letter Does
- Verifies Standing: It proves to the host parish that you fulfill all requirements outlined by Catholic Canon Law to represent the Church.
- Acts as a Passport: You cannot act as a godparent or confirmation sponsor at another (or sometimes even your own) parish without this signed and sealed document.
Requirements to Get a Sponsor Letter
To receive this letter from your local parish priest, you must typically meet these criteria:
- Age: Be at least 16 years old (or 14 in certain dioceses, such as the Archdiocese of New York).
- Sacraments: Have received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
- Marriage Status: If married, your marriage must be recognized by (or celebrated within) the Catholic Church.
- Parish Life: Be a registered, active member of a local parish (usually for at least two months), attend Mass every Sunday and holy days of obligation, and financially or actively support the parish.
- Faithful Living: Not be excommunicated or living a life openly contrary to Catholic moral teachings.
